Though 'gumpstinct' may sound better, 'gumption' is an actual word which is defined as:
1) Boldness of enterprise; initiative or aggressiveness.
2) Guts; spunk.
3) Common sense.
Used in this odd context, I think the word choice fits as an appropriate replacement for 'instinct'. Plus, it was the impetus for the image. Thanks to all for the great feedback.
