Hi all! I really enjoyed looking at the recent submersion contest entries and wondering at the skill it took to make a convincing view both above and below the water. For some time I've had a project in mind that would require doing something similar, but my first attempts at it look crude. I've asked some worthy Worthians for some pointers, and while helpful, I only felt comfortable asking for brief comments.
So for those of you with some good submersion techniques, I'd love if you could weigh in with some methods for creating a convincing look. I'm only really talking about the above/below/waterline look - I can do color matching, lighting, etc. But I've had a devil of a time getting a convincing surface/underwater/waterline combination and need some tips.
Thanks tons!
Great, I'll do that later tonight, thanks! I've got some good sources to work from - just need to know how to get it done!
Ok guys here's a couple I started with. As you can see the basic concept is to combine the surface image with the underwater image. In the dark blue version I just pushed them next to each other; the orange version is a little more worked. But obviously I have no real idea what techniques to use to make this look convincing - like there's a waterline there. ANYTHING you can say to help out here is GREATLY appreciated!
I like to use a separate layer for the water line, something that looks like a wave, (see bottom image). I added this to your pic, and set it in the hard light mode at 64% opacity. Also I lightened up the above water, it should be lighter than the under sea water...
Wow cameon that looks fantastic! Thanks for helping out.
So just so I have it straight, you take something like the wave photo, and free transform it to fit the join between surface and subsurface, and in this case hard light @ 64% opacity? Close enough?
Wow, that does look great. I'll have to try it out sometime.
Thanks for sharing that Cameon and congrats on taking gold in the recent partially submerged contest. I loved it.
Thats what I love about this site, people are so willing to share instead of retaining that knowledge.
I would personally love to see more tuts in this place

Yes that is correct. But a longer wave photo would be better so you don't have to stretch it out... and I erase the edges with a soft brush to make it blend with the other images.
Hello all, thanks so much for your help! Here's a good starting point for the rest of the project. Came through darker on export, but I'm going to have light sources to brighten parts of it up. Now on to phase 2...
The water line looks great! Nice work!
Hello all-
Many thanks to all those who helped with questions I had with this. I was able to complete my project very closely to how I was thinking about it. This is definitely the largest PS project I've done and I'm very pleased with what I've been able to learn so far. It's very addicting. =)
